Is it illegal for a parent to put a GPS tracking device in their child's car if they are over 18?
I recently found a GPS tracking device in my car which I know for a fact my mother put there. I am over 18 and am told that it is illegal since I am no longer a minor. Not that I would do this but could I take my mom to court and what would the consequences be?
It is my car and is in my name; however I did not pay fully for my car and I do not pay for my insurance either.

did she put in your car, or in her car that you drive?
Makes a big difference. If she put it in a car that is titled to you and you alone, yes it is wrong. If she put it in a car titled to her that she lets you drive, that is fully within her rights.

Who owns the car? Who pays the bulk of your support?

That would depend on whose name the car was in…If the car is in your mother or fathers name then they have every right to put whatever they want in the car. If the car is in your name then they don’t as far as it being illegal I seriously doubt it seeing as to how almost all of the new cars made have GPS in them.

Is it your car, and you pay the insurance? If it is, you can remove the device. If not, they can do what they want. There is no ‘law’ that makes tracking someone illegal, but you don’t have to accept it.
You can’t sue anyone, you have suffered no losses as a result.

It all depends on the situation. Do they did it without your consent? Your parents might be trying to protect some interest here, you know. Did you confront them about it? What did they say? Who pays for insurance in the car? Who is responsible for the car? Remember, even if you are 18 or a mature adult at any age, they still worry about what may happen to you, specially if you live under their roof. There are some parents that overreact on their kids protection, and this is nothing new. It seems like, this is may be one of those situations. If you don’t tolerate this kind of treatment, confront them, if they do not want to change their attitude, I think is time for you to leave, is that simple. I hope I make sense…
