I live in the state of Ca. & last week I financed a used car from a mid-sized used car lot. Eairler this evening they requested we bring the car in for them to take a few photos requested of them by the finance co. We didn’t make it there untill after the sun had set, and offered to bring the car back tomorrow when it was light out. They said that wasnt necessary and requested the keys to move car to lower level of lot to "photograph" under the shop lights. While waiting for our car and walking around the uppper sales lot to pass the time, my fiancie was able to see our car below and noticed mechanic working uo under the dash for a solid 10-15 min. (no one was taking photos). When we asked about the machanic we were told he was taking pix, & when we asked if they were installing a GPS in our vehicle, we were told "absolutly not", Knowing that finance Co’s have been knowen to install tracking devices in vehicles sold to individuals with crumby credit (for repo purposes) i demanded a stright answer from the salesmen in regards to our car. After alot of talking in circles we finally pulled a mostly TRUTHFULL answer out of the GM. And "Yes,-Indead" a GPS tracking device had been installed in our car. Is this legal? From the info i can find onlibne it appears that is legal, but laws chance from state to state, And if it is legal to secreatly track our every move (because we are concidered a "risk" with our very less then perfect credit), and then to not disclose this info to us upon our request? Sounds Like a violation of personal privacy rights to me.
Thank you for your answers, I’ll be waiting to read them.

Hi Guys,
I am a bit overwhelmed by all the vendors out there. But I am searching for a GPS tracking device which I can install in my vehicle and track it in real time through a web based application such as google maps.
I am based in Spain. I do not look for any plans or monthly fees. Just wanna pop this thing in the car and get going.
Thanks

I recently found a GPS tracking device in my car which I know for a fact my mother put there. I am over 18 and am told that it is illegal since I am no longer a minor. Not that I would do this but could I take my mom to court and what would the consequences be?
It is my car and is in my name; however I did not pay fully for my car and I do not pay for my insurance either.

Scenario (please use your imagination):
I run a car dealership (privately owned – not one with a label stuck to it from a big company). For argument’s sake, let’s just call it "Rockin’ Rides"
What I want to know, is that if I, the owner of Rockin’ Rides either lease out a vehicle, or provide my comsumers with a loan for said vehicle, is it legal for me to place a GPS tracking device on the vehicle?
This would not be monitored 24/7 — it would ONLY be used in the circumstance that the person at the other end of the lease or loan didn’t pay their bill enough times to warrant repossession. The device would be removed the moment their vehicle is paid for in full or their lease is bought out.
Technically, the vehicle is still mine so I figure I should be allowed to track my own property, but at the same time I’d essentially be tracking the person as well which is where the legal questions come in.
Does anyone have any insight or possibly real answers? If it helps, I live on Ontario (Canada).
Thanks!

I am looking at buying a GPS tracking device. Here is one that I found that sounds kind of good: http://cgi.ebay.com/Mini-Realtime-GPS-GSM-GPRS-Personal-Tracker-Tracking_W0QQitemZ170404863554QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGPS_Devices?hash=item27acebde42
I don’t understand the way this works. It says to insert a SIM card into the unit. Does that mean that you have to have a phone number assigned to it? The other method, which would be better for me, instead of having to call it everytime, is through GPRS. I don’t know what that is, how it works, how to set it up, or if it costs something.
Ideally, I would like something that you can put in a vehicle, that transmits to a computer constantly, showing how long a vehicle is stopped where ever it is stopped at as well. One that takes a SD card that I could swap out would be awesome, too!! Any ideas on an inexpensive model that would work this way? It needs to have a very long battery life, too.

I do a lot of field work, not going to specify the profession. There is a lack of supervision because I am always out on my own. I get my job done, bottom line. Does it seem strange that an employer might require a gps tracking device? I think they are passing it off as a safety issue, but what about weekends and time off? I don’t want my personal business to be available to my employer. Any thoughts?
