What are GPS Transmitters and Recievers?

Hello everyone,
I want to develop a GPS based Vehicle Tracking System. I want to know the following things:
1) Can i mount a GPS Transmitter on a vehicle?
2) Can I receive GPS data on a receiver attached to my Server?
3) Can the transmitters be attached to the vehicle battery for Power?

Please dont direct me to Wikipedia. I’ve already read those articles.

Regards.

    1. TV guy Says:

Look at the Web sites of companies that develop GPS "Modems"
They make chips for these exactly applications.

      1) Can i mount a GPS Transmitter on a vehicle?
There is no such a think. The GPS unit uses a GSM transmitter to transmit its location to a server.
Yes, you can have a GSM transmitter (it is usually built-in with the GPS).
      2) Can I receive GPS data on a receiver attached to my Server?

So, your server needs a GSM (cell-phone-like) receiver. Yes, you can receive that data.

      3) Can the transmitters be attached to the vehicle battery for Power?
Yes. You may need to go down to 5v DC
